Ethiopia Garners USD 169 Million from Horticulture Export

In the initial quarter of the current Ethiopian fiscal year, the Ministry of Agriculture reported that over USD 169.5 million was generated from the export of flowers, vegetables, and fruits. This performance surpassed 63.1 percent of the set plan, according to Mekonnen Solomon, the Horticulture Export Coordinator at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The total revenue was derived from the export of 96,443.36 tons of flowers, vegetables, and fruits during the specified period. Among these, cut flowers emerged as the primary contributor, accounting for over 146.26 million USD in revenue from the export of 30,922.69 tons to the global market. The vegetable sub-sector also played a significant role, grossing 17.2 million USD from the export of 58,340.40 tons. Additionally, the fruit sub-sector secured around 6.12 million USD from exporting 14,823.99 tons during the reported period.

The Ministry of Agriculture aims to generate USD 741.8 million USD in the fiscal year from the export of 351,030,031.71 kg of flowers, vegetables, and fruits. Mekonnen emphasized that concerted efforts are underway to ensure exports meet the desired quality standards and are packaged attractively, thus maintaining Ethiopia's competitiveness in the global market.
