The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration (MoTRI) announced that cement manufacturers in Ethiopia would now be able to distribute their products through chosen distributors, a shift intended to streamline the supply chain and better meet demand. The announcement follows a consultation forum between the ministry and cement manufacturers on aligning product supply with the growing demand in the construction sector.
Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, Kasahun Gofe (PhD), highlighted that the current cement supply of 7 million tons falls short of the national demand, which requires over 20 million tons. To address this gap, the ministry has discontinued its previous system of direct involvement in the cement distribution process, granting manufacturers the freedom to manage their own marketing links.
The ministry also emphasized its commitment to stabilizing the cement market and warned that manufacturers who fail to cooperate with government oversight and monitoring efforts might face consequences.
