Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced it earned USD 31.5 million from exporting electricity to neighboring countries during the first three months of the current fiscal year. The electricity was sold to Djibouti, Sudan, and Kenya, amounting to 497.8 gigawatt hours, with a revenue performance of 91.8% compared to the plan.

Moges Mekonon, Director of Communications at EEP, stated that the company generated 6,456 gigawatt hours of electricity for both domestic and regional consumption, a 36% increase from the same period last year. He highlighted Ethiopia’s growing electricity production capacity and rising demand from neighboring countries.

The power supply to Kenya, previously at a trial stage, now provides 200 megawatts under a formal agreement, contributing to increased export revenue. The transmission line to Kenya has the capacity to carry up to 2,000 megawatts, which could facilitate future energy exports to Tanzania.

Preparations are also underway to supply electricity to South Sudan and Tanzania. Negotiations with Tanzania have been finalized, and power transmission could be accessed through the existing line to Kenya. A memorandum of understanding has been signed with South Sudan, with technical work ongoing to begin electricity exports.
