Ethiopia to Build Silos in Drought Prone Areas

The Ministry of Agriculture in Ethiopia is to build silos in 11 drought prone areas to enhance the nation’s food reserves.

The ministry currently operates 7 silos across the country with the total increasing to 18 once the new silos are completed.

MoA has finalized the feasibility study, site identification, and soil study to launch construction on the silos according to information from the ministry.

Ethiopia has plans to increase food reserves to 3 million metric tons from the 400,000 metric tons that are in the seven existing silos according to Gizaw Abute, Acting Public Relation Head of Emergency Food Security Administration.

The EFSA has contracted consultants from England to support its plans to enhance disaster resilience.

The Ethiopian government has made more than 13 billion birr available for increasing food reserves and to construct the silos.
The investment by the government will also include digitalizing the manual systems used in storing grains.

It is expected that Ethiopia will harvest an estimated 215 million quintals of crops which is an increase in production of about 18 million tons from last season.

According to World Bank estimates the per capita production of an estimated 2.17 quintals which is neat to the minimum requirement.
