IP Policy WIPO

Woldu Yemmesel, Director General of the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority, headed a delegation from Ethiopia to the Sixty-Fourth Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The meeting is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, and will be closed on July 14, 2023.

During the meeting, the Ethiopian government revealed that it was engaged in a number of crucial initiatives to ratify the country's IP strategy and make the required changes to domestic laws. These steps are being taken to make it easier for Ethiopia to ratify the Madrid Protocol and the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.

Woldu expressed his appreciation for WIPO's significant contributions to ensuring the efficient and development-focused implementation of a global intellectual property system that aids developing nations, especially LDCs, in attaining knowledge-based sustainable development during the meeting. He also emphasized how Ethiopia's own growth and transformation strategy had a part to play in creating the right conditions for the growth of a competitive intellectual property system that would support the development of a competitive manufacturing sector, innovation, and technology transfer in the nation.

Woldu further emphasized the Ethiopian government's significant progress in improving the IP sector, including the approval of a national IP policy and the revision of some domestic laws to facilitate the accession process to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Madrid Protocol.
