Ethiopia: ECX Drafts Agreement to Modernize Wheat Sale Transaction

ECX WHEATEthiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) held a consultation workshop today on a draft agreement that would modernize wheat sale transaction. The workshop was attended by agricultural experts and experts from Ethiopian Standard Agency. The draft agreement is prepared with a view to supporting Ethiopia’s ambition to become self-sufficient in wheat production and export the cereal to the international market.

ECX drafted the agreement after analyzing samples that were collected from major wheat producing areas in Oromia, Amhara, SNNPR, and Sidama Regional States. The agreement is expected to play its part in ensuring the shipment of quality wheat to other countries.

The participants of the workshop raised various issues on the draft agreement. Among other things, they indicated that trainings should be provided to wheat farmers and other stakeholders on how they could preserve the natural aroma of wheat since the quality of wheat was dependent on its natural scent. ECX promised to include the comments raised by the experts in the draft agreement. It also revealed that a similar workshop will be held with wheat suppliers, exporters, and other stakeholders in the near future.
