Ministry Temporarily Halts Mandatory Speed Limiter Installation on Cars Imported to Ethiopia

ministry-of-transport-and-logisticsThe Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics announced newly imported vehicles can get licensed without having to install a speed limiter. However, the owners of the vehicles will be required to enter a binding deal to have a speed limiter installed whenever required to.

The Ministry said it made the decision to temporarily halt the prerequisite for vehicles to install a speed limiter "to address corrupt practices and administrative problems" exhibited in the service. Hence, owners of newly imported vehicles can get licensing services by providing required documents, and agreeing to have a speed limiter installed whenever required to.

Ethiopia started implementing a directive that required to fit vehicles imported into the country with speed limiters over two years ago. The directive has been drafted following analyses of findings that showed 80 to 85 percent of car accidents in Ethiopia were due to speeding.
