Ethiopian Diaspora Bringing Personal Items Won't Pay Customs Duty, Customs Commission Says

GreatEthiopianHomeComing-challengeEthiopian Customs Commission announced that Ethiopian diaspora coming home can bring into their country personal items without having to pay customs duty.

Debela Kabeta, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Customs Commission, said necessary preparations are underway following Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's call for a million Ethiopian diaspora to come home for Christmas.

The Commissioner said some in the business community should not use this as a means to abuse the system, importing for-sale goods without paying customs and causing burden on those that do business legally. The Commission will "continue" to take strict measures on those that do so, he underlined.

The diaspora coming back home should use the opportunity to bring items and supplies for their families, for the national defence forces, for displaced people, as well as for medical institutions, Mr. Debela addedd.

The Office of the Prime Minister has announced calls to a challenge it dubbed "The Great Ethiopian Homecoming," urging one million Ethiopian diaspora to come home for Christmas.
