Ethiopia: Sheger Bread to Start Operations in Two Weeks

Horizon Plantation PLC announced that its Sheger Bread project will be up and running in two weeks. Sheger Bread project is aimed at alleviating the shortage of bread in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, and stabilize the price of bread in the city.

Necessary works are being finalized to go operational in the coming week, Sisay Debebe, Sheger Bread's Project Manager, said. However, he added, the delay of a transformer required for the work and power shortage may further hold the opening day.

Mr. Sisay noted the bread factory has hired necessary personnel at various levels for the machine installation, among which are graduates of electrical, mechanical, chemical engineering from universities, and technical and vocational training colleges. For the consequent labor work, they are recruiting workers from various organized youth groups, he added.

“Though we were forced to replace the robot testing team since they could not be present due to the lockdown, the factory is trying its best to do it by domestic professionals,” the project manager notes.

The Sheger Bread project is owned by Horizon Plantation Ethiopia PLC, a subsidiary of MIDROC Investment Group.

Once it goes operational, Sheger Bread is expected to produce 80,000 loaves of bread per hour, and, to supply a 100g-loaf of bread at a price of 0.75 birr ($0.022) to the market.
