Addis Ababa: July 9, 2015 (FBC) – Constructed at a cost of 2 billion Birr, with support from the Government of Japan, Aluta Langano Geothermal power station has started generating power.
Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy Alemayehu Tegenu said, the Aluta Langano will play a crucial role in the second Growth and Transformation Period for Ethiopia to harness its huge geothermal potential for generating electricity.
The Japanese Government and the World Bank provided financial support for the expansion on the existing project established 20 years ago with the capacity to generate 5-7 MW of electricity.
Studies show that Ethiopia has the potential to generate as much as 10,000 MW of electricity from geothermal energy in its rift valley region.
