Water Supply and Sanitation

The provision of adequate water and sanitation are vital to improve living conditions and to ensure health, educational opportunities, gender equality and social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. Increased water and sanitation access and hygiene promotion create improvements in people’s health through better hygiene, improved water quality, and sanitation, but they also have an indirect positive effect on educational opportunities, gender equality, and the empowerment of women. Safe water and sanitation also underpin economic growth and environmental sustainability. Income benefits (for both households and government) may result from a reduction in the costs of health treatment and gains in productivity. Productivity gains stem from time saved from collecting water, the availability of water as an input to the productive sector, and a decline in water and sanitation related illnesses. Threats to water sustainability are both qualitative and quantitative.

In Ethiopia, like many developing countries and sub-Sahara Africa; is facing severe shortage of adequate water supply and sanitation infrastructure. Urbanization all over the country is growing rapidly, accordingly necessitating improved urban infrastructures. Adequate and potable water supply and sanitation facilities are one of these basic infrastructures; water is one of the most necessities for the existence of living things in general and human beings. Lack of adequate water supply and sanitation results in huge social and economic problems, but most of the time provision of adequate sanitation and potable water supply demands huge capital investment; this resulted in major challenges for government in providing their increasing populations with adequate sanitation and potable water supply. As a result, the demand for adequate water supply for industrial, commercial and domestic units continues to rise while the financial and technical capacities of most cities is limited, resulting in increased competition for this limited resource.

Proper solid and liquid waste management facilities are among municipal infrastructures that are used to safely dispose of waste generated by day-to-day activities of city residents. In most of the cities in Ethiopia solid and liquid waste management is very poor and very much below the standards as compared to other countries.

  • Client: Oromia Industry & Urban Development Bureau
  • Contract Period: May 2015- July 2015: Study Phase, & 18 months for construction supervision

Project Description

This project is the first of its kind in the country, to prepare both structural and planning management strategies for landslide hazard devastated town in Western Ethiopaia-Gimbi Town. Gimbi Town is the Capital of East Wolloga Zone of Oromia Regional Government. Gimbi town is located at a distance of 441 Km from Addis Ababa.

This town is a center of Coffee production and market in western Ethiopia, is a major connection and transport hub for western Ethiopia. However, due to poor infrastructure provision and total absence of urban drainage facilities, the town had suffered significant damage by rainfall triggered landslide.

To rescue the town from this natural disaster, we have conducted a comprehensive and detain investigation of all the town with emphasis on the landslide hotspots, and identified triggering mechanisms and others factors contributing to the problem.

The Management strategy proposed both physical structural facilities and planning strategies by preparing Landslide Hazard Zonation Map.

The structural measures are both remedial and preventative/stabilizing activities, while the hazard map would be used to revise the land use and other infrastructure plans in the long run.

7. Environmental and Social Impact Assessment & Ground Water Modelling Study for Erer Water Supply Project

  • Client: Harari Water Supply & Sewerage Authority
  • Contract Period: Feb 2016 – April 2016

Project Description

This project is undertaken to establish Environmental and Social soundness of the Erer Water Supply Project undertaken by Harari Regional Government in Erer Valley. The project aims at establishing probable Environmental and Social Impacts of the project in Erer Valley settlements due to the ground water abstraction in the shallow alluvial plains both by Oromia Regional Government and Harari Regional Government.

The Erer valley is currently the source of water for several rural villages, in addition there are ongoing activities to supply, Babile Woreda, Fadis Wordas of Oromia region; thus the Erer Water Supply project is additional abstraction. Therefore; there is a genuine need to undertake the overall impact due to the cumulative abstraction.

The ground water numerical simulation and modeling established the adequacy of the valley for the current and ongoing projects. In addition different sensitivity analysis showed the significant impacts that might be caused by minor decrease in recharge and increase in discharge that also used to put forward the necessary measures to be taken while ensuring safe abstraction and equitable use of the valley.
